January

January 3-20, 2008 ---Design/Build in the Dominican Republic
El Rincon, Dominican Republic

This 17 day design/build adventure will focus on a rural community project for the Women's Club of the Future of El Rincon. The class project will be to create a gathering area where both the local community and a burgeoning eco-tourist community can congregate. The design challenge is to make the site inviting for tourist vehicles that pass by on their way to famously beautiful Rincon Beach, as well as create a shaded public place for the residents of El Rincon. The goals of the class are to bring students through the design/build progression showing how the designing and building process continually inform each other throughout the project.

This class will take place in a rural part of the Dominican Republic; the lodging will be rustic: sleeping in tents on the beach, limited or no electricity, lots of nature, and tons of hard work. It will be the experience of a lifetime. Tuition includes travel within the Dominican Republic, rustic camping facilities in wall tents, and all meals. Intermediate to Professional.Tuition: $2,275. Instructors: Kyle Bergman, Sandy Lawton. www.yestermorrow.org

Jan 5-18, 2008 --- Natural Building in Thailand
Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand

This two-week natural building course in Thailand will bring together Thai and non-Thai students to work on the building of a kitchen and children's play house at the Whispering Seed community. As a collaboration with Whispering Seed (www.whisperingseed.org ), a children's home and community living and learning center on the Thai-Burmese border, students will spend two weeks learning the fundamentals of earth construction, gaining an understanding of the characteristics of different sediments (clay, sand, silt), and how to use a variety of techniques to create earthen building materials----from abode block, to cob, to wattle and daub, plaster, and more. The Thailand courses are unique in several respects: the student body will combine Western students and local Thai, Burmese and Karen students to facilitate cross-cultural experiences and learning; students will learn techniques for earth construction in tropical and subtropical climates incorporating bamboo, thatch, and round wood carpentry. February 9-10, 16-17, March 1-2, 15-16, 22-23, 2008 --- 13th Annual Permaculture Design Course
Tucson, Arizona

This course is one of the longest running Permaculture courses held each year in the U.S. and leads to a permaculture design certificate. It covers all aspects of sustainable design with an emphasis on Southwest Drylands, including a balance of hands on experience, classroom time, and design practicum. March 19-21, 2008 --- Design for Climate Change
Warren, Vermont

Comprehensive responses to climate change require the development of resilient biological and built systems that are adaptive in the face of shifting of climatic influences. This course highlights strategies for creating integrated building and landscape systems that can function in an age of climate extremes; longer droughts, hotter summers, colder winters, higher winds, increased pests, heavier precipitation events, and other patterns that will test our ability to thrive in a place. Field trips to projects that are developing climate-adaptable human habitat systems will be a central component of the course. Participants will also design a landscape-building system in which they apply course concepts. Major topics covered include microclimate design, water systems, food systems and architectural strategies. All Levels. www.yestermorrow.org
