JULY
July 3-23, 2006 --- Summer Teen Residential “Apprentorship” Program
in Natural
Building, Permaculture and more
Quail Springs Learning Oasis and Permaculture Farm, Cuyama, California
For teens ages 13-18. This unique and innovative intensive will offer
youth an opportunity to gain hands on personal development and vocational skills in natural building, permaculture design, sustainable food systems, composting, energy orders, simple aquaculture, ecological restoration, animal stewardship, wild animal tracking, healthy food preparation, nature appreciation and awareness, personal and community relationship building, “old way” earth skills, and many other activities and learning around the farm and in the surrounding wilderness. This program will have a limited capacity, keeping the group small to allow depth of experience for youth participants.
Youth participants will have the opportunity to gather essential tools that will allow them to begin to navigate the journey of uncovering an appropriate vocation in relation to their inherent gifts and abilities. Our innovative program design inspires the participants to gain valuable hands-on experience in a wide variety of life supporting and affirming tasks, and to bridge the learning-experience gap that most modern youth encounter by offering immersion in relevant work, life and community success strategies. Our groups are small which allow for intensive one-on-one counsel and which give the participant an opportunity to go through their own experiential processes at a pace that supports their unique learning capacities.
During the last weekend of the three-week program we invite the families of the youth to Quail Springs to camp and celebrate the learning and accomplishments of their children.
Cost: $1,500 (Some partial scholarships may be available)
(includes instruction, mentoring, healthy food, and tent housing).

AUGUST
August 2-6, 2006 ---Building
With Spirit - A Regional Natural Building Colloquium,
Thunder Mountain Retreat Center, Bath, New York
Don't miss this year's East Coast Natural
Building event...
Here's what Mark Piepkorn, Associate Editor of
Environmental Building News and Presenter at both the 2004 East Coast
NBC and 2005 Building With Spirit NBC has to say about these events:
"In the end, there's one really important thing that makes
Building With Spirit amazing. Sure, there's all kinds of new, fun,
valuable things to learn - tactile, hands-in-the-mud stuff that you
just don't get from the books or the internet. (If a picture is worth
a thousand words, then learning-by-doing is worth a hundred
thousand... not to mention the priceless self-confidence it provides.)
Sure, people can pick up tricks and tips to save precious days and
months of misdirected time and effort - not to mention thousands of
dollars of misspent money - on their own projects. Sure, there's the
great food, the beautiful natural setting, the music, and so much
more. But in the end, the most rewarding and inspiring thing is the
rare privilege of being with so many talented, smart, caring, willing,
extraordinary people... some of whom just happen to be world-class
natural builders, thinkers, and doers. It's the people - all of them -
who come together at Building With Spirit that are the best thing of
all. "

Natural Plasters for Healthy Homes
Old Mill Farm, Mendocino, California
Instructors:
Michael G. Smith and others.
Clay plasters can be the best choice for finishing straw bale, cob,
straw-clay, adobe, and other natural walls. They are durable,
beautiful, healthy, and easy to apply. They help protect the wall
beneath from weather, fire, dusting, and pests. Clay plasters can also
be applied over non-natural surfaces like plywood and sheetrock, so
they are ideal for health-conscious renovations. Many different colors
and textures are available, according to the ingredients you use and
the application technique. In this workshop we will be applying a clay
base coat to the straw bale walls raised during the July
"Building with Straw Bales" workshop. We will discuss and
practice the steps necessary to prepare different kinds of walls for
earthen plasters. We will also mix up and apply several different
recipes for beautiful clay finish plasters. And we'll watch a slide
show of many exquisite natural finishes from around the world. Cost
and Registration: $225 includes on-site camping and all meals.
Discounts available for locals and for multiple workshops. For more

--- Building
with Cob
Mendocino, California
Instructors: Michael G. Smith and
others.
Cob is an ancient earth-building technique time-tested in many
climates, from England to Arabia. It is made from a combination of
clay soil, sand, straw and water, mixed by foot and applied to the
wall by hand. It's cheap, durable and easy to learn, requiring very
few tools or specialized skills. Because it requires no forms, no
bricks, and no ramming, cob is intensely sculptural - like modeling
your own home out of clay. In this workshop you will learn to select
and test clay and other building components, make a good cob mix, and
apply it to the wall in the most structurally sound way. We will also
learn a technique for making unsupported cob arches and shelves and
discuss the installation of windows and doors, connections with wooden
parts of the building, and mechanical mixing options. Top it all off
with a breathtaking slide show of amazing cob buildings around the
world. Cost and Registration: $225 includes on-site camping and all
meals. Discounts available for locals and for multiple workshops. For
more information contact Stephanie at 707-937-3093; ssilva@mcn.org.
August 27-September
2 --- Complete
Shelter Workshop
Lakota Reservation,
Pine Ridge, South Dakota
This is a rare
opportunity for people to visit the poorest county in the United
States and help provide a comfortable cabin for a Lakota Indian. The
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is located in the southwest of South
Dakota (near mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park) and knows a
homelessness rate of 80%. Many people live in trucks, tents or
single-wide mobile homes with 20 or 30 others. The weather can be
extremely cold in winter time and very hot in the summer.
We are planning
to build a small, 300 square-foot cabin, made out of straw bales and
cob, and finish it of with a "living roof," a solar panel
for a few lights and a composting toilet. Almost all materials will be
harvested locally.
Participants
will learn how to build with cob and straw bale, as well as learn to
build foundations, work with earthen plasters and install a composting
toilet. We will also cover natural design, passive solar and small
solar electric systems. About half the participants of the workshop
will be from the reservation (at no cost to them; they have no money).
As part of the workshop we will be participating in and treated to
some of the rituals, spirituality and art (music and dance) of the
Lakota Indians.
Participants
need to bring camping equipment; all food will be provided. The
workshop starts on Sunday morning and will end Saturday evening with a
celebration. I will be visiting the reservation this Spring in order
to prepare the project as well as I can. Any further details that may
come up will be communicated via the website at that time. $890.
This
Workshop is offered by House Alive! Sign
up for this workshop, or check out the site
description for more info.

noise or protecting against deer in the garden. Once plastered, your
courtyard walls will be nearly impervious to wind and rain and can
last for hundreds of years. In this
relaxed hands-on workshop you will learn how to plan a wall, make and
build with cob, add sculptural details, and protect your cob walls
from the elements. $225-$300. Contact

2006 --- Shipping Pallet Home Building
Anapra, Mexico (across the border from El Paso, Texas)
Join the World Hands
Project in Anapra, Mexico to build a Pallet Home using eco-methods
for those in need. Experience cross-cultural immersion and expand your
world view while learning some basics of natural building while
helping those in need. Utilizing a local version of light straw/clay,
earthen plasters and our recycled pallet trusses, we will add these to
a home designed by our friends in Mexico. As the only affordable local
source of lumber is shipping pallets, many families use them for walls
and various structural components. The design combines a shipping
pallet home with natural building techniques, the result - an
economical, locally accepted building method enhanced to provide a
better insulated, more comfortable home. During the workshop, we will
join the house progress. Local builders will create the foundation
prior to our arrival. Our team will help raise the shipping pallet
walls, mix and stuff the walls with the straw/clay mixture, help mix
and apply earthen plasters, assemble the pallet trusses, and complete
the roof, to the best of our ability during the week. As always, we
will work alongside our local friends in community and co-operation to
create the house. COST: $475 for the entire time, includes room and
board and instruction. Does not cover cost to travel to and from the
project. CONTACT: For more info: www.worldhandsproject

--- Turning Your Dream Into Reality
Tesuque, New Mexico
Few things in life will give
us as much fulfillment as building and owning our own home. For
many of us, this is something we have dreamed of since we were
children. It is something that becomes part of our legacy, anchors the
core of our “wealth,” and gets passed down for generations. As we
approach the point in life when we can see this happening for
ourselves, we realize how daunting a challenge it can be. This seminar
is for you if you know you want to live in a healthy house that is
ecologically sound and beautifully designed. There are several
“green” building technologies out there. If you’re not sure
which one to pursue, this seminar will help you decide. If you think
you know how much square footage will make you happy, this course will
invite you to think again. Been looking for land in all the wrong
places? This seminar will help you develop a sharper vision for place.
Offered by architect and author Paula Baker-Laporte and EcoNest
Building Company founder and author Robert Laporte. More Info: http://www.econest.com/training/seminar2day.htm
