Renewable Energy for the Developing World -- Hands On
Rancho Mastatal, Costa Rica
Solar Energy International offers
this workshop Held at Rancho Mastatal, an environmental learning
center and retreat located in the last virgin rainforest of Costa
Rica's Puriscal County. Participants will stay at the center where
they build using natural building techniques, including bamboo and
cob, and support the use of renewable energy systems. Rancho Mastatal
practices and promotes living responsibly in the tropics, while
educating its visitors about the significance and majesty of the
world's disappearing tropical forests. In our fourth year at Rancho
Mastatal, this winter's workshop builds on the success of our past
workshops. Our program is focused on learning through hands-on work.
We'll spend about one-third of our time in the classroom, studying
renewable energy technology basics. The rest of our time will be in
the field or lab, getting our hands dirty, learning by doing. The
course is taught in both English and Spanish.Topics Include: The
Design & Installation of a solar-electric system, Building solar
ovens with a women's cooperative, Building a methane biodigestor,
Micro-Hydro site survey, and Social & Cultural Issues of Working in

Radical Simplicity with Jim Merkel
Brattleboro, Vermont
In the face of looming ecological disaster and
wars coupled with a stressful daily grind, many people feel the need
to change their own lifestyles as a necessary step in transforming our
unsustainable culture. Imagine you are first in line at a potluck
buffet. The spread includes not just food and water, but all the
materials needed for shelter, clothing, healthcare, and education. How
do you know how much to take? How much is enough to leave for your
neighbors behind you -- not just the six and a half billion people,
but the wildlife, and the as-yet-unborn? Jim Merkel quit his job as a
military engineer following the Exxon Valdez disaster and has since
worked to develop tools for personal and societal sustainability. He
is currently the Sustainability Coordinator at Dartmouth College (the
first person ever to hold that position) working to imbed sustainable
values and practices into administration, facilities, research,
student life, alumni and academic departments. He is Co-director of
the Global Living Project which runs sustainability education programs
and internships. He is the author of Radical Simplicity: Small
Footprints on a Finite Earth (2003). Directions: http://gradcenter.marlboro.edu

March 16-18, 2007 --- Cob
Courtyard Walls
Pensacola, Florida
Do you love
the old world charm of Spanish style courtyards and garden walls? You
can build beautiful courtyards, outdoor dining areas and more with the
traditional European building material, cob. Once
plastered, your courtyard walls will be very resistant to wind and
rain and can last for hundreds of years. In this relaxed hands-on
workshop you will learn how to plan a wall, make and build with cob,
add sculptural details, and protect your cob walls from the elements.
$50/day or $125/three days. Children are
FREE, Discount for two adults with children. *This
workshop will be held at a restaurant in an urban area. Our
hosts will provide a delicious lunch and light refreshments throughout
the day. However, because of the urban location, out of town
participants will be responsible for finding their own lodging.
You may take any day of the workshop without taking all three, but you
will learn much more by taking the whole workshop. Families with
children are especially welcome at this workshop and if two adults
will be coming with children under 12 the second adult is half price
($16/day). This is our least expensive
three day workshop this year! Presented by
Barefoot
Builder. For more information about this event please visit: www.barefootbuilder.com.

Historic Houses
Warren, Vermont
Older homes are typically built utilizing
materials and techniques not readily found in contemporary
construction. Not only do historic homes help preserve the cultural
heritage of our built environment, they are also underutilized as
renewable resources. All too often, character-defining features,
uncommon materials and exceptional craftsmanship are lost to
deterioration or removal when resolving maintenance and repair
dilemmas. This workshop will help owners of historic homes,
maintenance personnel, property managers, general contractors, and
anyone involved in the stewardship of older buildings to make informed
decisions on the job. We will discuss the historical, material and
technological changes that have shaped building construction practice.
Through lectures and site visits, students will learn where to look
and what to look for when assessing the overall condition of a
structure, how to prioritize their work, establishing routine
maintenance programs, and finding help for projects beyond their
capacity. All Levels. For more information: http://www.yestermorrow.org/courses/wbc/historic.htm.

elevations, and a scale model. Through conversation, lectures, and
slides we explore such issues as site planning, climatic design,
sustainability, building layout, structural principles, materials,
energy conservation, solar strategies, and what makes a building a
beautiful expression of its occupant's lifestyle. The class visits
local homes to view original, creative, and traditional design
concepts. Students learn the fundamentals of a design process that
they can apply to their individual projects. This class is perfect for
those interested in new home construction, remodeling or renovation,
or exploring a new career. Beginner to Intermediate. For more

April 16, 2007 ---Dancing
in the Rain: Interview with Brad Lancaster on New Dimensions Radio:
International Broadcast
New Dimensions Media will be
featuring an interview with Brad Lancaster entitled: Program
#3175 DANCING IN THE RAIN, hosted by MICHAEL TOMS. The annual
rainfall in Tucson, Arizona, where Brad Lancaster lives, is about twelve
inches. By harvesting the runoff from the roof, and the roads he
radically reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation in the gardens
he creates. By returning the water to the same watershed, he creates a
cycle of abundance that sustains not just one family, but the
neighborhood and the entire ecosystem as well. He adds solar power into
the mix, and plants food-bearing native shade trees to cool the home.
The result is an oasis in the desert, with a model that can be applied
in any community, from desert to coastal ranges and from remote rural
homesteads to suburbia. Most important, it’s a model that can help
solve an impending water crisis facing communities across the globe.

May 1-31, 2007 --- Southeast
Asian Sustainability Leadership Training (SLT), Training for Trainers
Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand
This year will be the 2nd annual SLT hosted at
Pun Pun Organic Farm, Seed Center, and Sustainable Living Learning
Center. We invite leaders and representatives of community, farmers,
and activist groups, along with other organizations in Southeast Asia
to join us. We will focus on tools of sustainability and training
techniques. Our intention is to enable community leaders to bring the
knowledge back to their communities/groups. The goal is to stem local
initiatives in turn creating a larger, more effective
sustainabilitymovement. Last year's participants included
representatives from "Flower Aceh," a women's organization
from Aceh, Indonesia (an area most severly hit by Tsunami);
"Youth for Peace" in Cambodia; and the "Karen Youth
Organization" from the Thai/Burmese border. All SLT participants
are now working with their respective groups on projects that stemmed
from the SLT. Our 2007 training hopes to include new representatives
from last year's groups, as well as new organizations.
Pun Pun is presently seeking donations to
cover the cost of the one-month training. The participants are from
grassroots organizations in less developed countries. They do not have
the ability to cover their own costs. Any amount given is greatly
appreciated and will go a long way, especially because so many people
are connected to each of our attendees' networks. Your contribution
not only helps individuals, but goes toward supporting sustainable
alternatives in SE Asia as a whole. For more information click here: www.mynewsletterbuilder.com//refer.php?s=34248233&u=1416826

2007 --- Keyline Design Workshop with Darren Doherty,
Australian Keyline & Permaculture Designer &
Teacher
New Cuyama, California
The Keyline Design Courses (KDC)
in Southern California will be an intensive blend of technical &
practical sessions and are targeted at professional land managers
& consultants, earthmovers & anybody interested in practical
& cost-effective
broadscale landscape restoration. The KDC's will outline all of the
principles and techniques involved with the modern, practical
application of Keyline Design. We have developed both short and longer
term events in different landscapes so that we can cater to
participant's different needs. A really great part of the three
courses will be the demonstration of the famous Yeomans Keyline Plow -
a multi-award winning implement that harvests water, halts erosion and
creates soil in its wake. Not many plows can claim that! Carbon
sequestration is also an important by-product of using a Yeomans
Keyline Plow. We will also demonstrate how to use normal farm &
earth moving machinery to harvest & store water on any farm. All
of this has to start with a plan - the KDC's will take you through the
simple and effective "diagnosis & design" process that
we have used on over 1100 properties world wide with a blend of low
& high tech solutions. Finally a quick acknowledgment of the kind
assistance of our partners in making these courses possible: Santa
Barbara Permaculture Network, Yeomans Plow Company, Nutiva Foods,
Quail Springs Permaculture Farm & Earthflow Design Works. Contact

May 6-12, 2007 --- Eco-Sense Cob
Building Workshop: Cob Building From the Start
Victoria, British Columbia
Be part of the leading sustainability
project in greater Victoria. Located on eight glorious Highland acres
the Eco-Sense project is rising up out of the land. This new project
started in February 206 and already the first cob building is completed.
The 230 sq ft woodworking shop will inspire us as we continue work on
the main 1550 sq ft two story loadbearing cob house. Complete
sustainability is no more than a beautiful earthen building as it
encompasses the best of modern technologies within all of the
systems. The home will be powered by the sun and wind with a state of
the art grid inter-tie net metering system with BC Hydro. Solar water
heating tubes will provide domestic hot water and hydronic in-floor heat
for the thermal mass building. The home will also feature a rain water
catchment system, composting toilets and re-use all of it's grey water
for irrigation of fruit trees. All of this will be surrounded by organic
vegetable gardens in the future. For registration and workshop inquiries
contact visit http://www.elkecole.com/%7Eelkecole/teaching.html.
For more general information about the project visit
www.eco-sense.ca The workshops will be part of the ongoing
construction process of the house- content may vary due to demands of
the building progress.
May 6-11, 2007 --- Strawbale
Design/Build
Warren, Vermont
Have you always wondered about straw
bale construction? Heard it is only for hot and dry climates? Think
again! With their combination of insulation and thermal mass, plastered
straw bale walls can be perfect for cold - and even wet - climates if
they are designed and built according to a set of time tested
principles. This course balances sessions in the classroom and on site
so you will learn to think your way through a bale house while gaining a
feel for the nature of straw, clay and lime as building materials. (The
January offering will complete a demonstration project in our heated
shop.) All Levels. This course offered by Yestermorrow Design/Build
School. For more information: http://www.yestermorrow.org/courses/mmbs/strwbale.htm.

timberframing – a true craft. It offers you a unique opportunity of
working with timbers as well as working with others. For some, this

architecture and perhaps the beginnings of a career in timberframing.
Regardless of your intent, the process of transforming a tree into one
of the “bones” of a home is magical. When you craft wood you in
turn are crafted. Here is an invitation to explore a two thousand
